Charlotte, Rock Hill, Fort Mill and Sun City Go Green! Be Irish for the day and join in the many festivities going on in the area: The Charlotte Goes Green Festival gets kicked off at 11am on Sat., March 13th with a parade, street vendors, lots of live entertainment and hands-on activities for all ages. Both Fort Mill and Rock Hill are having St. Paddy’s On Main Festivals from 4-10pm on Wed., March 17th. Closer to home, get your tickets now for our Sun City St. Patrick’s Party. Join your neighbors for an Irish dinner, green beer and a fun evening of Irish dancing and a special Sing-a-long.

One Village…So Many Choices! Two new restaurants and a bakery have opened up recently in Ballantyne Village. Extreme Pita a healthy dining experience with a lunch, dinner and late night menu! Before you go, check out the website www.RetailMeNot.com and print off a coupon for either “buy 1, get 1 free” or “kid’s meal free with purchase of an adult meal”. The Bue Taj restaurant offers an eclectic cuisine inspired by Thailand. Think Wolfgang Puck but elegant. Be sure to also stop by The Blushing Bakeshop and check out their creative cupcake-scapes. Keeping Hope Alive!

Keeping Hope Alive! The American Cancer Society 24-hour Relay is April 23 in Lancaster. In preparation for this event, we are having a fundraiser dinner at the Lakehouse on Fri., March 19. Tickets available at the Lakehouse. We also have a new cancer support group available to us at the CMC Carolinas Lakes Medical Building next to Walgreens on March 4 at 5:30pm. Banish Those Winter Blues! There is a flurry (not snow) of arts and culture events happening in February to get us out of the house. Check these out: Civil War Mustering Event (Feb. 20-21) and Back of the Big House (Feb. 6) both at the Historic Latta Plantation in Charlotte. For something a little more “upbeat”, plan to go to the Drum for Community (every Sat. in Feb.) for a time of storytelling, drumming and dancing. If you are looking for inspiration, the Friends of Arts at Queens University is showcasing the majesty and peace of landscapes seen in the works of Joann Sieburg-Baker on Feb. 26th (www.js-b.com). All of these events are in the Charlotte area, and they are either free or offer senior discounts.

Calling All Newcomers! Our area has become a magnet for newcomers, and we all bring our own traditions, habits and assumptions – our own cultures. The combination of old and new enriches our area, but also creates some challenges. Beginning on February 14, the Levine Museum will be sharing with us how our region is dealing with this growing cultural diversity and change – the “Changing Places: From Black and White to Technicolor” will be an informative and thought-provoking exhibit. You will get to see examples of how “things were done before”.
